Three Generations, One Cause: 600 Kilometres for Gabriel

December is usually a month of indulgence, short days, long meals, and a gentle easing into the end of the year. For our family, this December looked a little different.

Our 14 year old grandson set himself an extraordinary challenge: to run 200 kilometres over the course of the month to raise funds for Gabriel, a Ugandan boy of the same age who urgently needs a life improving operation. Two boys born worlds apart, but linked by age, circumstance, and a simple belief that one young person can help another.

Gabriel is a bright and hardworking 15-year-old boy who was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst in his sub-mandibular area – the space just beneath the jaw.

What began as a small lump continued to grow, becoming more painful and more visible over time and started affecting his ability to eat, talk and sleep.

Dermoid cysts do not go away on their own. Without surgery, they can become infected, press on nearby nerves, or cause long-term complications. Gabriel needed timely treatment as the growth was becoming increasingly painful.

Maxillofacial surgeon, Dr Daniel Macho performed a an excision of the cyst and repaired the affected area.

Now we have to pay the bill so we can afford to take on more patients like Gabriel.  Donations will help us cover the cost of his operation including, scans, anaesthesia, medical supplies, medication, post-op care and transport to and from hospital.

What makes this story even more special is that he didn’t do it alone.

His father and grandfather both committed to running the same distance, 200 kilometres each, turning an individual challenge into a shared, three generation effort. Together, that’s 600 kilometres in December, run in cold mornings, dark evenings, sometimes on a treadmill and between the pressures of work, school, and everyday life.

There was no fanfare. Just trainers on pavements, muddy paths, tired legs, and quiet determination. Some runs were easy, others were not. But every kilometre carried the same purpose, helping Gabriel get the operation that could change his future.

For a 14 year old, committing to such a distance takes discipline and resilience. But more than that, it shows empathy, the ability to look beyond your own comfort and recognise the needs of someone you may never meet. Running alongside his father and grandfather turned the challenge into something richer, a shared example of commitment, compassion, and doing something difficult because it matters.

This wasn’t about times, medals, or personal bests. It was about showing that ordinary people, families, parents, children, grandparents can do something meaningful when they choose to act together.

As December draws to a close, the kilometres are nearly all run, but the impact will last much longer. Gabriel’s story now lives in every step taken, every donation given, and every conversation started because of this challenge.

Three generations. One cause. And a reminder that sometimes, the best way to help someone else move forward is simply to keep putting one foot in front of the other. To donate to this project go to: https://www.humanitydirect.org/campaign/gabriel/fundraiser/3043/

What an uplifting message for this time of year and an exceptional young man willing to give an awful lot of his free
time to help another whom he shall probably never meet. As a family unit you truly are inspirational, generations spreading light into a sometimes dark world.
